Description
Islay is a great place to make whisky if you were living in the 1800s. Remote but great water and barley. In 1815 Laphroaig was founded by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston. Donald tragically died in 1847 after falling into a vat of hot pot ale at the distillery. It became famous in the early 1900s as it became released as a single malt. It has always been known to produce a heavily peated style.
Each year Laphroaig releases a limited edition bottling called Cairdeas. In Gaelic this means friendship.
Taste
The 2024 Cairdeas (Gaelic for friendship) is in honor of the 30 year anniversary since they founded the Friends of Laphroaig. This is a nod to the Triple Wood and PX releases. It is first matured in ex-Bourbon and quarter casks then finished in Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks.
Brand Tasting Notes: Rich, deep, and indulgent with intense sweet peat smoke, dried fruits and crystalized ginger.
