Description
Blackadder International was established in 1995 by Robin Tucek who, together with daughter Hannah and son Michael runs the family business. Robin Tucek is also co-author with John Lamond of The Malt Whisky File – one of the most respected books about malt whisky.
The Blackadder Raw Cask whiskies are complete cask whiskies bottled containing cask sediment.
Blackadder’s philosophy is very simple – they believe that the Cask is King. Sixty to seventy percent of the flavors in a whisky are taken up slowly from the cask as the spirit lies maturing in the warehouse. The action of changing temperature draws the spirit in and out of the cask. Every cask is unique, with its own fingerprint. This is why they bottle most of their whiskies from single casks. They don’t believe in chilling or otherwise heavily filtering their whiskies, and they never, repeat never, add caramel coloring and flavoring to their spirits. They have always believed the personalities of their whiskies are colorful enough.
Taste
A single cask of Millstone Dutch single malt, distilled at Zuidam Distillers in Baarle-Nassau on 16 December 2016 and matured for 6 years in an ex-Oloroso sherry butt, number 17B040. It was selected and bottled by Blackadder International at cask strength, 57.7% ABV, with no chill filtration and no added colour.
Oloroso is the classic sherry cask of traditional malt whisky, and Zuidam has a reputation for sourcing genuinely good ones rather than briefly seasoned stand-ins. Full-term maturation in that wood, applied to a slow-fermented Dutch spirit with real character of its own, is exactly the kind of release that has made Millstone single casks a quiet obsession among collectors. One butt, one bottling, and no second run.
